I visited my local Adder site this afternoon, just in case the 9C temperature and intermitant bright sunshine had tempted any reptiles out.  I saw what appeared to be a very pale medium-sized slow worm out on the surface, in amongst the dead bracken.  On closer inspection the animal was in fact lying with its ventral surface uppermost and unfortunatley appeared to be dead.  It was not obviously injured or decomposed and therefore perhaps it had emerged from hiberantion a bit too early and succumbed to the cold.

Yes it was optimistic to go out looking last Saturday, given the recent weather conditions, but

- In 2008 my first Adder sighting at this site was on 9 February;

- if you don't look you won't find and;

- good reptile sites are usually good for other wildlife, so always a chance of seeing something interesting, even on a cold winter day.

Having said that there are limits to my optimism - with no more than 2C, grey sky and some sleet I haven't looked today!

Been checking my slow worm compost bin for 2 weeks now and no sign of any slow worms. Usually out the first few days in March so I hope they're OK.

Hi All

I saw my first Slow Worm of the year at Portland in Dorset yesterday.  Also one Wall Lizard there.

many thanks to will for the help.

spent weekend visiting in-laws in hertfordshire and managed to get them all out for a walk in the woods on saturday. this rather large male was basking on top of a pile of rubble, garden waste and brash. he was very friendly and really impressed the kids.

thanks again will.

Last week, in good weather-

Single one under tin with 2 adders at "my"  site near Borth, mid Wales.

One very small one + 2 adults in my "other" site  by my caravan near Tregaron, mid Wales. I counted 40 ish here last summer, as per my photos on other thread.

Tim - if that's your hand in the photo, that's astonishing!  I'll have to go back to Baldock and try and find one for myself!

Cheers

Still looks big - but I fell for it!  Still, that's what you get from someone who lists synchronised swimming as an interest...
